Removable Disk Recovery
Data can be recovered in virtually all cases, regardless of the media it is stored on. This includes internal hard drives, removable drives --- such as flash and pen drives --- and discs, such as CDs and DVDs.

Built-in Tools
-
The first thing to try if you experience problems with a portable drive, external hard drive, pen drive, flash drive or similar device is the operating system's built-in disc repair. On MacOS X, this is the Disc Utility located in the "Utilities" folder. In Windows, it is "Chkdsk.exe," which can be accessed as a command line, or by right-clicking the disc that has problems and running Chkdsk from the "Properties" box.
Software
-
A variety of software is available for disc repair. Some software is designed for use with internal hard drives, some is specific to removable drives and some works with both. Determining which software will work best depends on the severity of the problem and the operating system.

CDs and DVDs
-
There are a number of applications specially designed to recover files from a damaged CD or DVD. In some cases, physical repair is also possible. Scratch removal kits are sold at most office and technology stores and professional repair services are provided by various companies.
