Hand Tools
-
Hand tools are usually all you require for planting a small garden. Necessary tools include a trowel for digging small holes, a spade for digging bigger holes and turning soil, a hoe for removing weeds and covering seeds, and a rake for smoothing soil after planting is complete. Other tools that are useful but not essential include a mattock, a shovel, an edging tool, and a digging fork.
Power Tools
-
Power tools are useful if you have a large garden. Power tools include a tiller, which is essential for breaking ground over a large area, and tractors and cultivators.

Care
-
Planting equipment needs to be cleaned regularly. Oil and mend all hand tools as needed. Sharpen blades and remove rust. Power tools should be cleaned as well, and worn spark plugs and parts will need to be replaced. Store tools in a dry place.
