A clogged drain occurs when material trapped in the drain partially or wholly covers up the drain and causes water to back up. A clogged drain should be dealt with immediately; it can be remedied with some materials ordinarily found around the home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hot Water and Dish Soap

    • Pour a solution that is one-part hot water and one-part dish soap down the drain. The hot water loosens the clog and the dish soap allows it to slip free. Avoid using boiling water, as hot water from the tap works well.

    Baking Soda and Vinegar

    • Pour 3/4 cup of dry baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Cover the drain with a rag immediately afterward. Let the solution sit for 30 minutes and then run hot water down the drain.

    Prevention

    • To prevent clogged drains in the first place, use a drain trap to keep the pipes clear of obstructions in the form of foreign debris. Also, teach children not to stuff things down the drains.
