Inversion Table Techniques

Inversion Table Techniques thumbnail
Inversion therapy uses gravity to treat back pain.

The back inversion table aims to temporarily treat back pain by taking pressure off the spine. This is accomplished by strapping a patient to a table and inverting them or turning them so their head is facing downward.

  1. Safety

    • Tables are considered safer than the gravity boot technique because the patient or chiropractor can easily control the table's angle and easily return to an upright position without risk of falling.

    Routine

    • A typical daily routine involves rotating slowly, toward an inverted position. This allows the body time to adjust to the new position. Once completely inverted the patient remains in that position for about five minutes before slowly returning to a level position. This is sometimes done more than once during a session. When first starting with an inversion table, it may be a good idea to invert more slowly for less than five minutes.

    Risks

    • Individuals with glaucoma, a heart condition or high blood pressure should not attempt inversion therapy without consulting a physician. The increased blood flow to the head can be dangerous for individuals with these conditions.
