Automobile Battery Startup Methods
One of the most common problems vehicle owners face is a dead battery -- the battery is no longer able to hold a charge. The two most effective ways of starting an automobile battery are jump-starting and push-starting.
-
Jump-Starting
-
To jump-start a car battery, you must have a second vehicle with an operating battery. Park the two vehicles close to each other. Next, connect the positive jumper cable end to the positive battery terminal of the dead vehicle, then do the same with the working vehicle. Repeat this for the negative jumper cable end. Turn on the working vehicle, and after a few moments, turn on the dead vehicle.
Push-Starting
-
If jump-starting doesn't work, vehicle owners with a manual transmission can try push-starting. Start by turning the ignition to the On position. Then, put the vehicle in first gear and push the clutch pedal to the floor. Have someone push the car forward and, when you have gained some momentum, release the clutch, which can make the engine start.
-
Considerations
-
There are key safety considerations for both methods. For jump-starting, never attempt to jump start a vehicle battery that is cracked and leaking acid; be aware that connecting jumper cables can produce sparks. For push-starting, vehicle owners should avoid attempting this method in busy streets where they risk a crash.
