What Is a Runtime Error in GPS?

Runtime errors in software usually occur due to synchronization or memory problems. Because global positioning systems (GPS) depend on satellite signals runtime errors in GPS are not uncommon nor are they easy to fix.

  1. Runtime Errors

    • In computer software, a runtime error frequently occurs when there is a problem with synchronization or when an application cannot get adequate resources. Runtime errors usually are proceeded by a noticeable slow down in application performance.

    Signals

    • Because GPS software depends on synchronization with signals from satellites, any number of things can interfere with that signal. Most people have experienced weak reception areas when trying to use a cell phone. When attempting to receive a signal from a satellite, though, many more things can interfere with a signal. Changes or interference in the ionosphere or the troposphere can interfere with signals, and any change in the signal length can cause a temporary loss of synchronization with GPS software and a runtime error.

    Firmware

    • GPS providers are aware of these problems and are continuously trying to improve the situation. All GPS users should check regularly for firmware updates whether or not they are experiencing errors.
