The Types of Large Coarse Ferns

Ferns are among the oldest plants on earth.

Ferns are non-flowering plants and among the oldest living things on earth, predating even the dinosaurs, according to the Smithsonian Institution. The are nearly 10,500 varieties and a wide range of forms. These include the 2- to 3-inch tall variety to large and coarse textured ferns.

Fern Palm

Fern palm (Cycas circinalis) grows to a mature height of up to 20 feet. The dark green leaves or fronds grow nearly 8 feet long and are arranged in a rosette form. Fern palm is a native of Africa and grows best in a fertile, loose soil. Fern palm is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 10 to 11.

Bird's Nest Fern

Bird's nest fern (Asplenium nidus) has stiff, bight green, lance-shaped fronds and a mature height of up to 5 feet. The fronds often have rough, jagged edges. It grows best in areas of low light and thrives in daytime temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It thrives best in hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 10 to 11

Bramble Fern

Bramble fern (Hypolepis repens) has rough fronds covered with sparse hair and grows up to 8 feet tall. It is easy to grow and spreads with creeping rhizomes. Grow in a moist, wet soil and an open space. Bramble ferm is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9 and 10.
