OneCare Safety

The Windows Live OneCare safety scanner is a free service offered by Microsoft. Its primary purpose is to ensure the ongoing health of PCs by identifying and eliminating external threats. The most common current threats are listed in the OneCare section of the Windows Live web site. As of January 2011, the most common threats are Win32/Conficker.B and Win32 Conficker.C, which are worms, as well as Win32/Sality.AM, which is a virus.

  1. Features

    • The Windows Live OneCare safety scanner has a number of features, including checking for and eliminating viruses and spyware, getting rid of unused files from hard drives and improving the overall performance of PCs.

    Specific Issues

    • While OneCare offers a full service scan that checks for threats, cleans up hard drives and improves performance, these features may also be accessed individually. This allows users to conserve computer resources when only one or two of the three services are required.

    Firefox Users

    • Users of the Firefox Web browser must adhere to special instructions. This is because OneCare is an ActiveX control, which is not supported by Firefox. To avoid this problem, a simple add-on called the IETAB add-on must be downloaded and installed.
