Occasionally DVDs are sold with an additional O-ring case covering the standard plastic case. An O-ring case is typically made of cardboard or metal and is open at the top and bottom. They slide directly over the plastic case and often signify the difference between versions of a film.

Steel packaging may come in various shapes and sizes for DVDs. Typically DVDs sold in this manner contain various other items in the container as well. Steel cases are most commonly distributed as cylinders or boxes.

O-ring packaging offers no true advantage to the consumer other than potentially different artwork than what is found on the plastic case it covers. DVDs in steel packaging are commonly offered with additional novelty items related to the movie. These packages are more expensive than just purchasing the movie itself and appeal to fans that are also collectors of the movie's merchandise.
