Different vegetables should be planted at different times in Nebraska.

Farmers and gardeners in Nebraska have a large window of time in which to plant their crops. This does not mean that when you plant is not important, only that different vegetables demand to be planted at different times. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Early Spring Planting

    • For gardeners that like to start early, many crops can be planted in March and April in Nebraska. You can start planting garden peas, asparagus, turnips and onions on March 15. Swiss chard, mustard and leeks can be planted starting March 30, and you can plant carrots, lettuce, beets and cabbage on April 1.

    Late Spring Planting

    • Other vegetables are more sensitive to frost and should not be planted until the last freeze of spring is behind you. For tomatoes, squash, beans, eggplant, cucumbers and sweet corn, the University of Nebraska recommends planting around May 15.

    Planting for a Fall Garden

    • You can plant a second crop of many early-season vegetables in the summer for a fall harvest. Choices for a fall garden include carrots, broccoli, turnips and cabbage. You can start planting in July or August for a fall garden.
