How Long Do Home Appliances Last?
Some home appliances may last a generation, while others may not make it five years. Each appliance's use and type of care varies, which affects how many years it will remain working, but having an estimate helps with household budgeting. Does this Spark an idea?

10 Years or More
-
You can expect the most useful life out of a furnace, central air conditioning unit and a gas stove, all averaging 15 to 18 years. Many dryers, electric ranges, refrigerators and garbage disposals last 12 to 13 years, while a freezer may give you 11 years of use. Expect about 10 years of usefulness from washing machines, water heaters and room air conditioners.
Fewer Than 10 Years
-
Set aside money more frequently for trash compactors, which average about six years of use, and dishwashers, apartment-size refrigerators and microwave ovens, which typically last nine years. Expect about eight years of life from a dehumidifier or humidifier.

Planning Ahead
-
Regularly inspect and do maintenance on appliances to get the most useful years from them and avoid costly repairs or early replacement. Using the lifespan estimates as a guide, save money for replacement or major repairs so you do not face a sudden financial shock when a major appliance finally breaks down.
