Hawaiians give leis to mark important events, offer congratulations or show friendship.

Ancient Hawaiians used bones, teeth, sticks, braided human hair, bird feathers and shells to make their leis. Today, flowers and foliage are used. The most popular flowers are blossoms from plumeria, orchid, lehua and yellow Ilima plants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Plumeria

    • Plumeria leis are the leis most commonly seen in airports and hotels. Plumeria flowers look like pinwheels with five petals that are colored white, red, yellow or pink. The flowers are very fragrant and are frequently used to make homemade leis.

    Orchid

    • Hono hono orchids are popular flowers for making leis. The small flowers come in many colors including blue, fuchsia, purple and yellow.

    Lehua

    • Lehuas, the official flower of the island of Hawaii, are said to be sacred to the volcano goddess Pele and her sister Hi'iaka. The flower is featured in different legends involving the two goddesses. Lehua flowers are orange, yellow or white.

    Yellow Ilima

    • The yellow ilima is the official flower of Oahu. Only one inch in diameter, the flower looks something like a small hibiscus. Early Hawaiians used ilima flowers to cure illness.
