How Is a Hand-Crank Mixer Manufactured?

How Is a Hand-Crank Mixer Manufactured? thumbnail
This classic design is still manufactured today.

The cordless hand mixer, a one-time kitchen mainstay for beating eggs and making cakes, works off muscle power alone. Although not as popular as electric models, manufacturers continue to produce hand-cranked mixers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Design

    • Hand-crank mixer styles range from egg beaters to tabletop mechanisms. Cooking expert David Bovitz reports these hand-powered devices combine liquid ingredients utilizing a simple gear and shaft design.

    How it Works

    • Manufacturers create hand mixers by attaching gears to a base that holds two beaters. A handle connects to the gears via a rod. By turning the handle, the attached gears rotate the rod, which spins the beaters.

    Manufacturers and Consumers

    • Electric mixers, invented in 1908, replaced hand-crank mixers in many kitchens. Consumers buy hand mixers today to save electricity, or simply prefer them to electric models with cords, detachable mixing heads or bulky designs. Hand-crank mixer manufacturers include KitchenAid, Bradshaw International, Ekco, Norpro, Kuhn Rikon and Danesco.
