Background

Wireless networking allows computers and other devices to make data connections without the use of cables. Wireless devices work to a fixed set of standards, set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE.)
Compatibility
-
The integrated WiFi supplied with the Inspiron provides support for the 802.11b standard, which offers speeds up to 11 megabits per second (Mbps) and the 802.11a standard, which can offer faster performance, up to 54Mbps. The laptop doesn't provide support for the 802.11g and 802.11n standards, but wireless routers and access points usually provide backwards-compatibility for 802.11b devices, meaning you should have no problem connecting your Inspiron to the vast majority of wireless networks.

Encryption
-
The Inspiron 8500 provides support for wired equivalent privacy (WEP) and wireless protected access (WPA) encryption technologies. You will need to know the network key (password) to connect to an encrypted network.
