Nissan Xterra Transmission Problems

Save

Introduced in 2000, the Nissan Xterra is a midsize SUV built on a truck platform. The Xterra is available in four-wheel drive and is equipped with numerous enhanced off-road capabilities. Despite the Xterra's numerous features, it suffers from several mechanical issues, including transmission trouble.

Radiator Leakage

  • The most heavily reported transmission issue with the Xterra is transmission failure due to a faulty radiator. Radiator failure causes engine coolant to leak into the transmission, thus destroying it. This issue primarily is reported with the 2005 Xterra.

Warning Signs

  • Being aware of possible transmission failure symptoms may prevent your Xterra's transmission and radiator from needing total replacement. Warning signs include heavy vibration while shifting gears and accelerating. Aside from vibrations, Xterra drivers also reported the vehicle abruptly stalling.

Solution

  • If you notice warning signs, you may be able to replace the radiator before it affects the transmission. Repair Pal estimates the cost of a new radiator at $542 to $779 for parts and labor. If your transmission is beyond repair and requires replacement, it will cost between $3,000 and $5,000 for parts and labor.
