Free Garden Seeds and Plants

Starting a flower or vegetable garden does not need to be a large investment. Online resources, family, friends, and neighbors can help you cut the costs of starting a garden by providing free seeds and plants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Businesses and Nonprofit Groups

    • Many seed and gardening companies offer free seed samples if you become a club member, purchase a large amount of seeds, or participate in community programs. The Ed Hume Seed Company hosts a "Seeds for the Hungry" program, in which it gives away 250 seed packets to persons willing to donate what they do not use to the less fortunate. Other gardening clubs often send sample seed packets to anyone who signs up for membership.

    Community

    • To locate free plants and seeds, look to your neighbors and local community. Encourage friends and acquaintances to participate in a seed and plant swap to give away unwanted seeds and plants. If you notice a lovely row of tulips in your neighbor's yard, ask if she minds giving you a few bulbs for your garden; she'll be flattered that you think her flowers are beautiful, and you'll get free tulip bulbs.

    Online Community

    • Take your quest for free seeds online to social networking sites. Post a status update on your page asking for free seeds or starts of plants that anyone would like to give away. You may also have success at gardeners' forums for swapping seeds and plants.
