How a Marine Amplifier Works

How a Marine Amplifier Works thumbnail
A marine amplifier must be water-resistant.

A marine amplifier works essentially the same as a car or home amplifier. It uses electricity to amplify audio taken from a source (such as a CD or MP3) and routes it through a set of speakers.

  1. Weatherproofing

    • One major difference between a marine amplifier and a car amplifier is that a marine amplifier must be water- and corrosion-resistant.

    Speakers

    • Most marine amplifiers output to two- or four-speaker sets. When installing a marine audio system, it is important to install waterproof speakers as well.

    Power Supply

    • Marine amplifiers, like car amplifiers, are built to run off a 12-volt system. If you are planning to use one near a pool or anywhere else plugged into a home electric system, you will need an AC-to-DC electrical converter.
