Use of Gaskets in Lined Piping

Piping can be made from various materials, such as plastic. In particular, metal piping is used to move liquids, but can require other components, such as gaskets, for attachment to other piping.

  1. Identification

    • Metal piping requires a lining along its walls to prevent damage and corrosion to the length of the pipe from the liquids within, resulting in lined piping. Gaskets, or shaped rings, are used in between piping junctions for sealing purposes.

    Function

    • Specifically, gaskets are placed between a lined metal pipe and a different pipe material. They function alongside an installed spacer, providing support for the integrity of the spacer and sealing the connection. This coupling of the spacer and gasket work together to prevent liquid leakage between the two pipes.

    Significance

    • Gaskets allow the different materials of piping to adhere to one another. Therefore, gaskets do not need to be used if two similar types of lined piping are joined, assuming the attachment is fabricated correctly.
