Tomato Plant Turning Brown Around the Edges of the Leaves

Tomato plants are susceptible to a number of diseases that cause browning of the leaves. However, this browning usually occurs either in spots or over the whole leaf. Browning of tomato leaf edges has just one likely cause. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bacterial Canker

    • Bacterial canker causes browning of tomato leaf edges, and leads to premature plant death and disfigured fruit.

    Symptoms

    • Additional symptoms of bacterial canker include curling leaflets and a yellowish brown discoloration inside the stem. Infected plants wilt. The leaves generally brown only one one side, rather than all the way around. The fruit has small raised blotches that are yellow-white in color.

    The Bacteria

    • The bacteria that causes bacterial canker is carried in the seeds, and can survive for a short time in soil and on equipment. It lives even longer in the debris of dead plants. To prevent the spread of canker, pull out any diseased plants and several healthy plants around each infected one. Disinfect everything that came in contact with the plants.
