Repellent to Control Gnats

Also known as midges, gnats are small, non-biting flies. They often look like mosquitoes and can become a nuisance because they form swarms in the air. Immature gnats develop in water and feed on plant matter. Several repellents can help control gnats. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Aerosol Sprays

    • Pressurized aerosol sprays that contain pyrethrins as the active ingredient can kill gnats on direct contact. They can only treat smaller areas and provides no residual effect. More gnats usually enter the area as soon as the sprays settle.

    Liquid Chemicals

    • Liquid chemicals that contain malathion or carbaryl can reduce the numbers of gnats. These chemicals kill adult gnats that rest on plants during the day.

    Long-Term Control

    • Long-term control of gnats involves eliminating breeding sites, such as wet areas and standing water. Because gnats are a temporary nuisance, insecticide application to water does more harm than good. Insecticide damages the environment and endangers wildlife.
