Data governance is a form of configuration management for data across an organization. Data standardization refers to when data formats are agreed upon across organizations. Data standardization is necessary for data governance across multiple organizations as well as for data sharing without errors.

According to the book "The Data Governance Imperative" by Steve Sarsfield, "Data governance is a set of processes that ensures that important data assets are formally managed throughout the enterprise. It guarantees data can be trusted and that people can be made accountable for poor data quality." Data security is managed by policies called access control limits.

Unique user IDs and activity logs are necessary for data governance. The ability to trace who performed what actions allows for identification of those who violate data and IT policies. Data governance also demands a data model. Data models define where information comes from, the rules for the information to be entered and how data will flow between applications.

Data standardization is when different groups agree on common data definitions. Fields in the database must have standard field names, common definitions of what goes in that field and universal field formatting.

Data standardization requires all data to be input with the same numerical format; data cannot then be entered with a month spelled out. Data standardization is simpler if all parties share the same database or compatible databases with frequent synchronization.
Data Governance and Standardization Policies

Medical databases must implement access control policies to meet the privacy requirements of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Government contractors must meet data governance and security policies set by the federal government. Data governance policies can also be determined by state law.
