Where Are the Engine Casting Numbers on a GM Big Block?


General Motors big block engines appear in all GM makes, including Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, GMC and Cadillac. GM big block casting numbers are easy to locate, but the casting number's location depends on the GM brand in question.

Chevrolet/GMC Casting Numbers

  • Chevrolet big block engine casting numbers are at the rear of the engine block, on the Bellhousing/transmission mounting flange on the driver's side. This is also true for GMC trucks, which use Chevrolet engines. The Chevrolet casting number is usually six to seven digits long.

Pontiac Casting Numbers

  • A Pontiac casting number is called the production number, and it is on the engine block's passenger side. Pontiac casting numbers are normally six-to-seven digits long.

Buick/Oldsmobile Casting Numbers

  • Buick production numbers are at the front of the engine block, near the cylinder head and follows a format similar to "AB123. Oldsmobile tends to follow this pattern also.

Cadillac Casting Numbers

  • Cadillac casting numbers are at the rear of the engine block, between the intake manifold and the bell housing. Cadillac casting numbers are normally seven-digits long.
