Restart Problems With a Microsoft Bluetooth Dongle for Windows 7

Microsoft Bluetooth dongles allow portable devices to connect to your Windows 7 computer over short distances. If your computer is not configured properly, or if your Bluetooth dongle is bad, it is possible to encounter problems with the Bluetooth connection when you restart your computer.

  1. Types

    • For your Bluetooth devices to work properly upon restarting your computer, your computer must be configured to recognize Bluetooth devices upon restart. Other problems could be that the Bluetooth dongle is broken or the dongle drivers on your computer are outdated. Additionally, something else on your computer could be interfering with the Bluetooth dongle.

    Configuration

    • Before attempting other solutions, check if your computer is configured properly. Click on the Start menu, click Control Panel, then click Bluetooth. Click Change Bluetooth Settings, then click on the Options tab. Make sure the boxes next to both read "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer" and "Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer" are checked.

    Considerations

    • If your computer is properly configured, you can run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter. In the Control Panel, click Troubleshooting. Click Hardware and Sound, then Configure a device. Select your Microsoft Bluetooth Dongle from the list and follow the on-screen instructions. This will check if the device is broken and if your device drivers are up-to-date. If that does not solve your problems, run your computer in a clean boot state to see if another program is interfering with your Bluetooth. Run Msconfig, and select Selective Startup. Choose which programs to start up when your computer restarts. Click OK. Restart your computer and see if your Bluetooth dongle works. This is a trial and error process and make take several attempts to locate the problem.
