Vinyl fencing is relatively fragile compared to lumber and metal fencing products, and the components of a vinyl fence typically attach with a unique system of brackets. Working with Vinyl Fencing Materials

"Vinyl" fencing is typically polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a brittle plastic used for various plumbing and building applications. PVC is brittle and must be handled with care. Pre-drill holes rather than simply driving screws through vinyl. Use finish-quality saw blades to achieve a smooth edge on cuts through vinyl fencing materials.

Post System for Vinyl Fences

Vinyl posts consist of three basic parts: a concrete pier, a metal or wood post and a vinyl sleeve. The vinyl sleeve included in most vinyl fence kits cannot support the fence on its own. Install the sleeve over a concrete pier and metal or wood post to fully support the fence.

Rail and Board System for Vinyl Fences

Vinyl rails do not directly connect to vinyl posts, but attach with special brackets. Installing rails without brackets results in cracked posts and split rails. Vinyl fence boards often connect directly to rails with sheet-metal type screws.
