Section 508 Compliance
The federal Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, or Access Board, established the Section 508 standards in December 2000 to provide accessibility guidelines for electronic and information technology. The guidelines apply to programs and services funded by the federal government.

Section 508 Standard

Section 508 is a component of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which sets standards for federal agencies similar to those of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Compliance with the 508 standard involves meeting specific requirements for several technology types, criteria for the functional capabilities of these technologies, and requirements for related documentation and support.
Technologies

The standard applies to the full range of electronic and information technologies, including computer hardware and software, telecommunication devices, websites, video and multimedia, office equipment, and information kiosks. The 508 Coordinators Reference Manual details the requirements for each technology type.

Exceptions

Certain exceptions, including national security, undue burden and small purchases, may exempt a federal agency from complying with Section 508. In addition, agencies are required to comply only to the extent that appropriate technology is available.
Complaints

Any person with a disability may file a complaint with a federal agency that is not in compliance with Section 508. The agency must follow procedures specified in Section 508 to resolve the complaint.
Reporting

Federal agencies must report to the Department of Justice every two years on their compliance with Section 508.
