Vanagon Wheel Information

The Vanagon -- sometimes called the T25 or Transporter -- was a rear-engine van manufactured by Volkswagon between 1979 and 1992. The Vanagon featured strict wheel requirements,

  1. Identification

    • All Volkswagon Vanagons were shipped with either 14 or 15-inch wheels -- often referred to as rims. Standard width was 5.5 inches. All Vanagon wheels featured a five-bolt pattern. The Vanagon's stock wheel-offset was ET-35, although ET-45 wheels worked just as well.

    Types

    • As of early 2011, few options exist for people seeking wheels for their Vanagon. Volkswagon dealers sell Vanagon-specific rims, but they are often expensive. Wheels manufactured for some Audio 5000 Quatro -- and Mercedes-Benz C220 and C230 models -- will fit. Volkswagon Passat rims -- taken from vehicles manufactured in 1996 and later -- fit the Vanagon. Salvage yards are often a good source for Vanagon wheels.

    Warning

    • Wheels and tires are not the same thing. A variety of different wheels fit a Vanagon, but the vehicle's weight is such that only certain tires have the required wall thickness. Use only those tires with reinforced sidewalls and a D-load range.
