A Guide to Shrub & Tree Selections

Selecting the right type of tree or shrub for your yard or garden is a simple process. Follow a few guidelines to pick the perfect plant for your project. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Deciduous or Evergreen

    • Decide what purpose the tree or shrub will serve. If you want shade only in summer, choose a deciduous tree. If you want year-round shade, you need an evergreen. Evergreen shrubs makes a good year-round border year, while deciduous shrubs show only their bare branches in winter.

    Size

    • Determine the size a tree or shrub attains at maturity before purchasing or planting a specimen. You may not want a large tree that will dominate your yard or small shrubs that will not give privacy if used as a hedge.

    Shape and Color

    • Consider the shape and color of a tree or shrub before placing in your yard. The open spreading shape of an oak makes it an excellent shade tree to sit under in summer. The bright color of the red osier dogwood provides a striking accent to an otherwise bland landscape.
