Plans for Building an Ottoman

Ottomans --- low-standing, upholstered stools --- sometimes hollow to be used for storage, are often expensive when purchased at a furniture store. Building your own may save you more than a few dollars. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Materials

    • You will need plywood for the frame and legs. Stain and varnish will also be needed. Purchase ogee molding if you prefer rounded corners. For the upholstered portion, set a prefabricated cushion atop the frame. Otherwise you will need fabric, batting and foam if you wish to upholster the ottoman yourself.

    Tools

    • To build the frame you will need: a saw, wood glue, nails, nuts, bolts, sandpaper, drill, paintbrush, screwdriver or a staple gun. If you're upholstering the ottoman yourself, you will need scissors and a sewing machine or a needle and thread.

    Construction

    • Create a box using the plywood. Add hinges to the top plank of the box if you wish to use it for storage. Construct and attach the legs to the bottom four corners. Sand and stain the wood. If you're upholstering the ottoman yourself, cover the top of the box with foam and then cover the entire frame with batting. Sew a slipcover with your fabric and slip it over the batting.
