The Best Time of Year to Plant Crocosmia Bulbs in Oregon

The warm red and orange blooms of crocosmia bulbs make a great addition to an Oregon garden. This hardy relative to gladiolus can withstand the temperate climate in western Oregon, as well as the cooler winters in the state's central and eastern regions.

When to Plant

Though this summer bloomer can be planted in both spring and fall, Oregon spring rains make fall the best season for planting. Plant blooms in September if you are east of the Cascade Mountains. Warmer temperatures on the western region of Oregon allow for planting from September through November.

Tips for Planting

Place bulbs in a hole that is 5 to 6 inches deep. Be sure to aim the thin roots down to allow the flower to grow properly. Cover with soil and mulch, and water once until the plant emerges.

Growing Crocosmia in Oregon

Several variations of Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora, including 'Jenny Bloom,' 'Emberglow,' and 'George Davison,' grow very easily in Oregon's climate. 'Lucifer' and 'Solfatare' are a little more fragile, and need protection from wind and frost.
