Diode Lab Analysis

Diodes allow electrical current to pass, or flow, in one direction only. Ordinary diodes can be divided into those that pass small currents -- typically of 100 milliamps (mA) or less -- known as signal diodes, and those that pass larger currents, known as rectifier diodes.

  1. Semiconductors

    • Two layers of a material -- such as silicon or germanium and known as a semiconductor -- make diodes. Semiconductors possess electrical conductivity between insulators and conductors, with individual diodes having distinct current-voltage characteristics.

    Circuit

    • Laboratory examination of the characteristics of a forward-biased diode -- which allows current to flow -- occurs by connecting the diode with a power source and a variable resistor. Varying the value of the resistor varies the current that flows through the diode, allowing the plotting of its current-voltage characteristics.

    Ohm's Law

    • Calculating the current flowing in the circuit uses Ohm's Law, expressed as V = IR, where V stands for voltage, I for current and R for resistance. Attaching the probes of an oscilloscope measures the voltage across the diode.
