Organic Fig Tree Care

An abundant fig harvest is possible with organic growing methods.

Growing figs organically is surprisingly easy due to the adaptable nature of the species. Figs require a minimum of care and only have a few needs that must be met to grow well. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Planting

    • The planting site must be well drained. Figs will tolerate a wide variety of soils, but wet ground will kill them. Poor soil is actually preferable to fertile soil. Rich planting media will cause the fig to produce abundant leaves and top growth but little or no fruit. Loosen the roots well before planting and make sure the tree is at the same planting level in the hole as it was in the pot. Firm the soil lightly and water in well. Figs will tolerate drought once established, but during the first two years of growth check soil moisture regularly in summer. In cool-season areas, choose varieties like Hardy Chicago that will reliably bear fruit.

    Alkaline Soil

    • Figs prefer an alkaline growing medium. Acid soil will affect fruiting even more than an overly rich one. Adding lime in the spring will correct the problem. Sprinkle an 8- to 12-inch band of horticultural lime around the trunk, repeating every year in acid soil areas.

    Pruning

    • Root pruning can cause a previously fruitless tree to begin bearing. Drive a shovel straight down through the roots, slightly within the drip line of the fig. The drip line is the overall canopy diameter. Root constriction and pruning encourages fruit formation and makes the top growth less vigorous. The canopy can be trimmed in spring. Remove dead or broken branches and thin out thicker growth that shades ripening fruit.
