A semidwarf Fuji apple tree produces sweet, crisp fruit.

Semidwarf varieties of apple trees grow to be about 15 feet in height and are generally easier to manage than standard-size trees. Fuji bears a red, sweet-flavored fruit with a crisp texture. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Pruning

    • When first planted, the semidwarf Fuji apple tree needs pruning to encourage proper branching. If the tree is a nonbranched, bare-root whip, cut it off at the top at approximately 36 inches above ground. If it is branched, remove all branches lower than 24 inches above ground, dead and damaged branches, and branches less than 30 degrees vertical.

    Watering

    • Apple trees require at least 1 inch of water weekly. Supplement rainfall with irrigation if needed. Do not allow the tree to go for more than three weeks with no water.

    Fertilization

    • The semidwarf Fuji apple tree needs nitrogen fertilizer two weeks after planting and again six weeks after planting. It requires annual fertilization in the spring after the first year with nitrogen fertilizer. Contact your local county extension office and discuss fertilizer requirements for your area's soil.
