How to Compare Wireless Frequencies
More and more electronic gadgets, from smartphones to laptop computers, need wireless capabilities to access the Internet or even to print remotely. The frequency bands used by these devices can vary.

A wireless router projects a predetermined frequency within its designed range so computers and devices that have wireless abilities can access items, such as scanners. A frequency is a wave vibration sent out through the air carrying modulated information.

Every router has a set frequency. Wireless modulation techniques such as 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g use the common 2.4-gigahertz frequency band range. Unfortunately, many other devices, such as child monitors and land line cordless phones, use this frequency range, too. This results in constant interference issues with these devices.

Prevention/Solution

A newer router, using 802.11n technology, uses both 2.4 and 5.0 gigahertz frequencies. Working both frequency ranges results in devices having less interference problems and greater signal strength.
