The Cutting & Stitching Method for Handbags

The Cutting & Stitching Method for Handbags thumbnail
Leather shears are used to cut handbag pieces from leather or synthetic materials.

Craftspeople and manufacturers construct handbags out of materials including leather, suede, fabric and faux leather. They cut and sew pattern pieces for handbags using tools, sewing machines and specialized glue to hold pieces together during construction. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Leather Cutting Tools

    • The handbag-maker spreads out the leather or faux leather on a flat surface with a rubber mat underneath the material to protect cutting tools from damage. After penciling a cutting line onto the leather, the crafter cuts pieces using leather shears or a straightedge razor knife. Multiple passes may be necessary when cutting to puncture through the material with precision.

    Fabric Adhesives

    • As an alternative to sewing, fabric adhesives fuse handbag pieces together to create seams, and work for adding embellishments and trim. Adhesives protect bonded pieces from fraying and do not stain fabrics.

    Sewing

    • Hand sewing employs a needle strong enough to puncture through the material during stitching. For handbags constructed from lightweight materials such as nylon and satin, thread and lightweight needles will work. Leather and faux leather require strong thread or yarn and heavyweight needles for stitching. Sewing machines use various programmed stitches such as zigzag and satin stitch. After sewing, pattern pieces get embroidered with designs and embellishments.
