Cane Begonia Propagation

The jointed stems of cane begonia have a bamboo-like appearance.

Cane begonia is a sturdy blooming plant, distinctive because of its large, shapely leaves and long, fleshy stems. The leaves of the cane begonia can be used to propagate new plants. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Preparation

    • Begonia leaf cuttings are planted in containers filled with a lightweight planting medium, such as half peat moss and half perlite, or a commercial potting medium. The cane begonia should be watered the day before taking the cutting, as a well-hydrated plant will be more likely to root successfully.

    Cut the Leaf

    • A sterilized, sharp knife is used to cut a leaf, from a healthy cane begonia. The begonia leaf will include up to 1 1/2 inches of stem.

    Plant the Leaf

    • The lower half of the stem is planted in dampened potting soil. Several tiny plantlets develop at the base of the leaf. The plantlets are severed and planted in individual containers. The original leaf can be replanted to form new begonia plantlets.
