What Does a Chevrolet Idle Control Module Do?

An idle control module, or valve, controls the speed of an automobile's engine when idling by regulating the amount of air that bypasses the engine throttle valve. These modules are a part of all cars, including those made by Chevrolet.

Function

The idle control module is turned on and off based on signals delivered by the vehicle's electronic control module -- the on-board computer that controls numerous engine functions. The signals the computer sends are based on information from a number of sensors located in and around the engine.

Purpose

An idle control module regulates the idling speed of an engine based on a number of factors for the purpose of conserving fuel and reducing emissions. The vehicle's computer delivers idle-speed information based on such factors as temperature, electrical load, air conditioner load and transmission load.

Usage

Air is a necessary component for combustion in any engine. The idle control module is basically a valve that limits or increases the amount of air that enters the engine, either increasing or decreasing the amount of internal combustion, and thus, the speed of the engine.
