What Hardware Would You Use for an Online Banking System? thumbnail
Mid-range hardware systems can effectively support online banking.

Several hardware platforms support online and offline banking transactions. Banking institutions are aware of the power of an online presence and how it serves new and existing customers. An online banking system (known as Internet banking) is effective when the correct software application and hardware configuration is used.

  1. Function

    • The function of an online banking system is to capture transactions through the Internet and provide customers access to their accounts. Banks with an online presence can expand and reach new customers, and create unique financial programs. However, the hardware systems must be able to drive and support regular banking information systems, Web development and maintenance of online banking programs.

    Hardware Identification

    • Hardware which supports online banking must support Web application development and management with a smooth integration into a main banking information system. Many banking institutions use a mid-range client/server hardware configuration with several enhanced features. The motherboard can contain up to four processors to handle special arithmetic or utility functions. The system can also consist of several hard drives designated for backup, data warehousing, application management and Web application services. All client/server hardware which has to access the Internet is usually configured with T1 or T3 high speed lines to access the Internet and enhance Internet response time.

    Benefits

    • Mid-range systems are small, powerful and easy to maintain. Mid-range system hardware is less expensive than high-range equipment, has built-in, preventive maintenance utilities which automatically monitor central processing unit (CPU) usage and other hardware functions. Workstations can be integrated into the system and configured to process regular and Web banking transactions simultaneously.
