Knowing the location of a water meter allows a customer to track the cost of water and ensure that there are no pipe leaks or plumbing issues. The exact location of the meter varies depending on the residence.

Locations

In the front yard of a freestanding home, look for a round or square iron lid close to the curb or within 10 feet of the curb and marked "water." In frigid climates, the water meter could reside in a basement near the main water line.

Considerations

Necessary tools such as pliers, tire irons, wrenches or screwdrivers open the lid. Use caution upon opening the lid. Water meters potentially house spiders, insects and even snakes.
