Gas Water Heaters: Cold Weather Use & Safety
Hot water is especially necessary during the colder months. A gas water heater needs special care during these times to ensure the integrity of the piping and heater body so permanent damage to the unit does not occur. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Function
-
Gas water heaters function by bringing cool water into the belly of the tank and warming it through natural gas. Once a hot water faucet or shower head is activated, the hot water travels through piping to supply that water flow.
Prevention
-
The key to keeping a gas water heater functional through the cold months is consistent maintenance. Every six months, the tank should be drained to prevent rusting. Rust can weaken the body of the tank and when cold weather sets in making the incoming cold water to the tank even cooler, contraction of the tank walls can cause a crack and subsequent leakage.

Considerations
-
If the homeowner is going to leave for a long duration during the colder months, it is recommended to drain the piping and tank so freezing does not occur. Gas water heater lifespans are normally between eight to 12 years, so proper maintenance is key in keeping the heater functional for peak performance.
