Sycamore Tree Propagation

Sycamore trees grow to be between 75 and 100 feet tall.

The sycamore tree is also known as the American sycamore, the buttonwood and the plane tree. Propagation of the sycamore tree is a straightforward task with two possible methods.

Propagation From Seed

Collect the sycamore tree's round fruit in the fall and dry it out over a period of weeks. Place the seeds in a bag and shatter them, which allows you to collect the seeds. Separate the seeds and store them in a cool, dry place over the winter before planting them in the spring.

Propagation From Cuttings

Sycamore tree cuttings are available commercially, and they allow a quick start to your shade tree. Select cuttings that have the whitest bark for good tree health. Sycamore seedlings may be prone to damping off, which refers to problems at the root line.

Conditions

Whether sycamores are grown from seed or from cuttings, they need full sun, as the tree is intolerant of shade. They thrive in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 thorough 10, and they require deep watering during the summer months.
