Rosy Glow Barberry Propagation

Rosy glow barberry (Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Rosy Glow') is a show stopping shrub that lights up the landscape with rosy pink foliage adorned with reddish purple accents. Rosy glow barberry can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Propagation by Seed

    • Rosy glow barberry is propagated by planting seeds that have been chilled at 40 degrees Fahrenheit for four to six weeks, a process known as stratification. The seeds are then planted outdoors in early spring. Seeds that haven been stratified can be planted outdoors in autumn and will chill naturally in the soil throughout the winter before germinating in spring.

    Semi-hardwood Cuttings

    • Rosy glow barberry also can be propagated by semi-hardwood cuttings taken between spring and autumn, when the wood still has a greenish color. Sharp pruners are used to take cuttings measuring 4 to 6 inches in length. The cuttings are planted in moist sand, a warm location and low sunlight until they take root.

    Hardwood Cuttings

    • Rosy glow barberry can be propagated by hardwood cuttings in October or November, when the shoots should be hard but still have leaves. Hardwood cuttings are planted outdoors with only the top two leaf buds above the soil. The soil is watered occasionally through the winter months. Trees that successfully take root are moved to a sunny, well-drained locations.
