Guide to Pool Valve Replacement

You usually will not have to empty the pool to fix a valve.

Swimming pools employ a variety of valves to regulate water and air flow. Recognizing the valve type, reasons for malfunctions and basic replacement steps are necessary to proper valve maintenance.

Valve Types

There are three main types of swimming pool valves. The filter multiport valve, connected to the filter, ensures that water flow is properly directed from the swimming pool pump. The air relief valve is located at the uppermost section of the filter tank and assists in the release of pressure within the filter. The diverter valve works in conjunction with the pump assisting in the volume of water moving between the skimmer and main drain to the pump.

When to Replace

Pool valves can malfunction and need replacement for a variety of reasons. For example, when multiport valves become cracked, springs become worn or broken, the valves will no longer function properly. More commonly, damaged spider gaskets are the cause for multiport replacements.

Replacement

Swimming pool valves can be replaced with the correct tools and by following simple instructions. For multiport valve replacement, tools include a flat head screwdriver, Teflon tape and water pump pliers. After turning off the filter and pump, the unions that connect the pipes and filter tank to the valve should be loosened. Once removed from the pump and filter, the multiport fitting should be removed. Next, after wrapping the fitting in Teflon tape, insert the fitting into the new valve. Reconnect the tank and pump unions to attach the new valve. To check that the installation was performed correctly and that there are no leaks, reactivate the filter system.
