Passion vines have complex, showy flowers.

Passion vines, also called passion flowers or maypops, are members of the Passaflora genus. These fast-growing vines are perennials but tend to die back in the cold season. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Appearance

    • Passion flower is a climbing vine that lifts itself to heights of up to 12 feet, anchoring on nearby shrubs and structures. It has three- to five-lobed leaves and complex purple, white or blue flowers. Some passion flower vines produce edible fruit.

    Climate

    • Passion vines grow best in USDA growing zones 6 through 9, including the north and central American South and portions of Washington state, Oregon and Northern California. Passion flower dies back to the ground at the first frost, but it regrows in spring.

    Culture

    • Grow passion vines in locations with full or partial sun and light, well-drained soil with even moisture. Mulch well to prevent water evaporation. Passion flower can be highly invasive, even when regularly killed by winter cold, and may need routine pruning.
