Acura Tl 2002 Transmission Problems

Introduced in 1995, the Acura TL is a midsized four-door luxury sedan. The 2002 TL features a Type-S, 3.2-liter engine and is available in both four-speed and five-speed automatic transmission. Despite its Sports Shift technology, the TL's transmission is susceptible to failure.

Transmission Failure

MSN Auto indicates that the 2002 TL has occasional transmission failure, which may result in the transmission locking. A locked transmission can result in a serious accident and/or injury. The cost to replace the TL's transmission is estimated at $3,033 for parts and labor.

Recall

In April 2004, there was a recall on over one million affected 2002 TL automatic transmissions. If you have not received a recall notice, you can call your local Acura dealership to see if your vehicle is on the recall list.

Extended Warranty

As a result of the numerous cases of affected transmissions, Acura extended the factory warranty on the TL's transmission to seven years or 100,000 miles. Although the seven-year factory warranty has now expired, your 2002 TL may still be covered if its mileage in under 100,000 miles.
