How to Compare SUV Reviews

How to Compare SUV Reviews thumbnail
If you want to compare luxury SUVs, then focus on luxury models and not mid-range brand reviews.

Sport utility vehicle reviews are subjective and don't necessarily address the wants and needs of a prospective buyer. Reviews only offer a road map to the right SUV. Personal test drives and independent research are the only sure ways to make the right choice.

  1. What's Right

    • Buyers should have a clear understanding of what kind of SUV they want and need. For example, if they have a large family and deep pockets, they should consider reading reviews on the full-size Chevrolet Suburban with a large V8 engine. Compare the Suburban reviews to the similar but more luxurious GMC Yukon Denali. The difference between the two is how much you are willing to pay for luxury appointments, as performance is similar.

    What's Wrong

    • Comparing a review of a full-size SUV to a compact model, like a Hyundai Tucson, is like comparing apples to oranges. The Tucson features moderate power and is designed primarily for urban use. Full-size SUVs are generally more versatile and can adapt to most road and environmental demands.

    The Crossover

    • Buyers should understand the difference between a truck-based SUV and a crossover SUV. The crossover is a passenger car disguised as a truck-like SUV. Reviews of truck-based SUVs focus on versatility between the street and off-road. Power and torque are primary factors in reviewing truck-based SUVS. Reviews of crossover or compact SUVs focus on fuel efficiency, urban road handling and creature comforts.
