Silk trees, or mimosas, are native to southern and eastern Asia. Dr. Masato Yokoi in Japan discovered the chocolate silk tree in 1990; its patent was assigned to a nursery in California in 2003.
Description

The chocolate mimosa is a deciduous tree with soft, pink flowers that bloom in the middle of summer. Its fern-like foliage begins green, and turns a remarkable burgundy-brown color as it matures. This tree grows quickly to about 20 feet tall and approximately 15 feet wide.

The chocolate mimosa tree requires full sun exposure for optimal growth. This tree does well in many climates, even those with extremely warm temperatures. The leaves fall as early as September and begin to grow again in May.
