What Size Thread Is Needed to Stitch Mono 18 Needlepoint?
Mono needlepoint canvas is a single mesh canvas that is quite popular among those who indulge in the craft. Mono canvas comes in several sizes, ranging from 7 through 18. The size is a reference to the number of threads per inch. Smaller sizes equal larger holes and a more open weave.

Canvas

Size 18 needlepoint canvas is typically used for very detailed designs. Although size 18 canvas is the most popular size among seasoned veterans of the craft, it is not recommended for beginners. The best quality canvases are made from cotton, but are available in linen and cotton as well.
Stitching
-
Thread should glide smoothly through the canvas. Thread will shred when pulled through openings that are too small. Holes which are too large for the thread will result in a poorly crafted project where the canvas shows through in the stitching. All needlepoint threads can be classified as one of three types: round, flat or stranded. The best size needles to use on mono 18 canvas are #20 and #22. Thread size depends greatly on the type of stitch you are applying to the canvas.

Threads
-
A wide variety of threads can be used on mono 18 canvas, depending on the design, length of the stitch and the stitch style. Needlepoint threads or yarns come in a variety of plies and strands. One type of silk thread will require three plies for a basket weave and eight plies of the same thread for long stitches. Silk Road Needle's website provides an extensive list of canvases and the best threads to be used on each. The website also breaks down the threads by plies and strands to use for different stitches.
