Planting Guidelines for Anemone De Caen

Anemone de Caen is a single-petal cultivar of the windflower (Anemone coronaria). Native to the Mediterranean region, these hardy bulbs are also available in double-petal varieties.

Identification

Anemone de Caen typically reaches a height of 9 to 18 inches with an average spread of 6 to 9 inches. This perennial grows upright on a root-like stem and produces poppy-like flowers that are approximately 2-1/2 inches in diameter. Flower colors include white, blue, crimson, lavender and red with black centers. They bloom in late spring.

Planting Considerations

Anemone de Caen is recommended for United States Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 7 through 10. For best results, soak the tubers overnight in clean water before planting. This method restores the vitality of the tuber. Sow them 4-inches deep and 4-inches apart. Dig them up in the fall and store during the winter.

Habitat

Anemone de Caen prefers full sunlight to partial shade and sandy soil with adequate drainage. It is commonly used in rock gardens and as a border flower.
