Solar radar speed monitors increase safety.

Police and highway patrol personnel place solar powered radar speed monitoring equipment on roads and highways to monitor and broadcast the speeds to motorist. When evaluating equipment specifications, monitor size, speed range detection and light-emitting diodes (LED) ratings are important specifications to consider.

Monitor Size

Monitor displays range in size from 12 inches to 18 inches with a two-digit LED display board. The monitor display board is often a black aluminum housing to offset the red LED display. Most monitors are trailer mounted for easy mobility and placement.

Detection Range

Monitors can detect speeds ranging from 5 to 99 miles per hour. Most also come with a speed limit sign that can display a speed limit anywhere from 10 miles per hour to 75 miles per hour. Some of the smaller monitors can mount on a speed limit pole

LED Rating

LED rating determines the amount of hours the LED display can function prior to being replaced. The standard is 40,000 hours. Most LED displays come with a battery backup to the solar power ranging anywhere from 480 amps to 960 amps.
