Methods
-
Warm, soapy water removes dirt and grime from kitchen countertops, and is usually sufficient for daily cleaning. However, if you've prepared food, especially raw meats, on the countertops, sanitize the surfaces with a germ-killing product.
Types
-
Commercial sanitizing products usually contain ammonia or chlorine bleach. Both kill germs satisfactorily. You can also make a sanitizing solution at home by mixing 1 tsp. chlorine bleach with 1 quart warm water. Mix the solution in a spray bottle, and spray the countertops. Wait 10 minutes, then rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.

Considerations
-
Always read the labels when using commercial cleaners. Some may require that you leave the product on the surface for several minutes. Don't mix chlorine bleach and ammonia cleaners because the combination produces toxic fumes. Chlorine may damage or discolor some hard surfaces, such as colored grout. Always consult a manufacturer regarding the care of your countertop.
